Breaking the Patterns 2025 (Creative Europe, Erasmus+ funded and Waterford City & County Council-funded Lisbon art residency)

Meu Nome é Carlos Miranda
Film, 3840 x 2160 (20:01")

Of my three-month art residency in Lisboa, our Lisbon stay concluded with the #BTPLISBOA exhibition at NowHere Gallery.
In thinking about what to produce for the residency’s wrap-up exhibition, I drew direct inspiration from my internship in Safra, an art community-and-gallery space nestled in a quiet but connected neighbourhood called Lumiar. I found my focus in an unexpected friendship with Senhor Carlos Miranda - Safra's octogenarian master framer - and this playful mockumentary grew from there.

Despite no shared spoken language, we communicated through shared labour and a mutual affinity for play, bifana sandwiches and fabulously cheap wigs. Following Carlos in my ‘Carlos Miranda Drag,’ our misunderstandings and collaborative cosplay was a reminder of the universal, tangible connections that anchor us all.
